Elevation Gain Time Calculator

Enter elevation gain to see the time it adds — and how grade steepness changes the exchange rate.

How elevation time calculator Works

The exchange rate

One hour per 2,000 feet is the century-old exchange, and it prices well: climbing is roughly three times as time-expensive per mile as flat walking. The grade band refines it — sustained 800+ ft/mi grades add a surcharge ( footing, rhythm, breathing), gentle grades a discount. The calculator applies the band automatically.

The descent tax

Naismith ignores descent because smooth downhill roughly nets out on round trips. Rocky and steep descents break that netting: controlled footing, quad-braking, and knee management make downhills cost 60–75% of ascent time on technical ground. Round-trip plans on rocky mountains should budget it — the descent is where tired legs meet gravity with opinions.

Training the climbing term

Vertical is trainable specifically: stair repeats, incline treadmill, and hill repeats raise the climbing metabolism directly. Hikers who train flat and hike steep discover the gap at mile three; the exchange-rate calculator makes the gap visible before the trailhead does.
